Beyonce's “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) was of one the biggest hit singles of 2009. While Beyonce' was referring to putting a ring on her hand, the song lyrics have taken on a different meaning.

A public awareness campaign was held in Chicago, Illinois to introduce the new and improved female condom. Campaign members used the “Put A Ring On It” theme to help promote the ringed condom. They also assisted in informing and instructing women on how to use it correctly.

The female condom was originally marketed in The United States in 1993 by The Food and Drug Administration. The condom is composed of a long pouch with two rings on each end. The female condom was made from polyurethane, a common alternative to latex Although it served the same purpose as the male condom, the

original female condom has its disadvantages:

Cost- In comparison to the male condom which can be cheaper than a dollar, the price of the original female condom was between $2.00-$4.00 a piece. Who could really afford that?

Comfort- The original female condom lacked in comfort. The new female condom is said to be softer than the original. This provides more comfort to the female during sex.

Volume Control- Women who used the original female condom complained about how noisy they were during intercourse. Male condoms were said to be much quieter.

Removal- The process of removing the female condom could also be seen as a disadvantage. The female condom has to be inserted within the vagina whereas the male condom is applied externally, making it much easier to remove.

Aside from increasing comfort levels, the FDA wants to insure that women who live in developing countries would have easy access to the condoms. These are areas of the world where STD rates, especially HIV, are extremely high.

Whether you use a male or female condom, be sure to protect yourself during ALL sexual activity. Just having one unprotected sexual encounter can cost you much more than a couple of dollars. It could cost you your entire life.
