Former NFL Star Randall Cunningham’s Son Drowns in Hot Tub

By: Taren Vaughan

Randall Cunningham becomes another athlete that loses their child to an untimely accident at their house. Cunningham’s 2-year old son drowned Tuesday afternoon in his backyard hot tub at his Nevada home. Cunningham was not present at the time of his son’s death; he was said to have been out of town at the time of the incident. Randall Cunningham has been out of the sports spotlight for quite some time now as he has become heavily involved in his ministry. His church members are being very supportive of Cunningham and his family as they endure this horrible tragedy:

“We were there for support," "It's about being a church family and supporting the family. We believe in the resurrection and we believe that his son Christian is going to be OK.”

Pool deaths occur so often all across the United States and should not be taken lightly. The death of Christian Cunningham and all of the other children that have lost their lives should be a true eye opener and lead us to be more cautious when it comes to any kind of pool related activity. Our hearts go out to the Cunningham family as they mourn the loss of their loved one.

R&B Singer Mya Turns Pop?

By: Taren Vaughan

Numerous R&B artists have crossed over into the world of Pop. Beyonce’ was one of the first new school R&B divas to make that move, followed by Ciara and Rihanna. Now Mya will be joining them on “the other side”. According to the singer, her next album will have dance music on it. She has teamed up with DJ Junior Sanchez who has produced hit records for Pop sensations Shakira and Madonna. Mya is hoping that working with him can result in some hits of her own.

On working with DJ Junior Sanchez:

“Working with Junior Sanchez is an incredibly creative experience, and we have been having so much fun in the studio”

This is a new sound for Mya as we are all used to her urban style of music. She has not released an album since 2003 and I’m sure fans are anxious for her to drop another one. The biggest question is will Mya find her place in an already crowded Pop industry? Or does she need to stick to her original R&B roots?

Books For Belles: “The Last One” By: LaQuarn Michaels

By: Taren Vaughan

Author LaQuarn Michaels’ “The Last One” is by far one of the most drama filled, intense novels that I have read in awhile. Taking place on the mean streets of Brooklyn, NY, the main character, Isis Dobbs goes through things that most 21 year old women only see on cable TV. Her life was full of ups and downs that would have even drove a grown man to tears. Isis was a ruthless chick with a sassy attitude to match who was always down for whatever. Like many hustlers out there, Isis’ hardcore demeanor and often nonchalant approach to things left her in some rough situations that ultimately ruined her life. Readers may find the main character in this book interesting because she is a female. With the kind of predicaments that Isis found herself in, most of us would automatically assume that she was actually a “he” instead, seeing as though men are usually the hardcore ones in suspenseful dramas involving hustling, gang banging or drug dealing. But Michaels steers her readers into a different direction with Isis, a true to heart “Bad Girl”.

Although the book may not have been based on a true story, the situations that it highlighted are definitely things that we ourselves or people close to us have endured, which adds a heavy dose of realism to “The Last One”. From abusive ex-boyfriends to dead beat baby fathers, “The Last One” captured almost every unfavorable situation that a woman could find herself in. If you are one for fairy tale endings, this is definitely not that kind of book. The book did have its humorous parts to it, but for the most part, it was pretty intense. No matter what one’s normal book preference is, I guarantee that you will be intrigued, as each characters’ story becomes more complex with the turn of each page.

LaQuarn Michaels’ style of writing is very descriptive from beginning to end. In this novel, she allows her readers to really feel as though they are standing right there on the streets of Brooklyn, watching it all take place before their eyes. Michaels may be a new author to the writing scene, but in due time, I foresee her becoming a household name.

Your Weekly Horoscope (6/28-7/4)

Your weekly horoscope.

By: Amanda Anderson

When it comes to your relationship, you might feel like setting all the rules and giving out all the commands. But you'll find that your partner responds better when you both act as a team, and they really just need you to listen more than you have been talking lately. You might feel the urge to make a big deal out of something really small, but be warned that picking fights will push your partner away further than you would like them to be. Relax, and stop approaching your relationship with so many doubts. They are unwarranted.

Midweek you will feel more in tune with your partner than you have been in quite a while. This is a perfect opportunity for a date night, and a little romance will do you both good. The end of the week could put a wrench in your renewed romance, but if you remain calm, you'll get through it and refrain from making hasty decisions. Keep your emotions intact during the weekend, and you'll end your week on a good note with your loved ones.

Famous Cancers: 50 Cent, Bill Cosby, Nelson Mandela, Montel Williams

You're the boss, and you let everyone around you know it every chance you get. But this week may be the best time to sit it out, and let things work themselves out for a change. You'll be hesitant to do this since you are the Queen of the Jungle, but even Queens need to take a break from the throne to keep their sanity. Now just because you take a backseat for a few days doesn't mean you can't develop a master plan. Midweek will be perfect for research and crafting some pretty exciting ideas. And while you're on the backseat flow, you'll notice that fate can be a pretty good driver at times without your help Lioness.

Famous Leos:
Barack Obama, Halle Berry, Magic Johnson, Angela Bassett

Feeling generous? Of course you are. When a close friend explains their stressful situation, you'll find yourself crafting great ideas on how to make things less hectic for them. This is one of your greatest strengths, and you'll find that you prefer being a helper than being a harsh critic who can come off as insensitive to others' problems. But be careful when helping your buddies, because coming off too strong may make you seem like a hardened belle who rather play a bully than a superhero. Save the day instead of being the villain.

Famous Virgos:
Dave Chappelle, Beyonce Knowles, Michael Jackson, Jada Pinkett Smith

You're craving something new and you'll get the change you need from unlikely sources. Last week was stressful, and the unknown is more appealing than it has ever been. Use this week to get to know people you're never given a chance, and pick up a new hobby or interest that you have been pondering on for the last couple of months. Change is good and in your case, needed. Have fun this week, and get to know the unknown.

By Thursday, your romantic life will see a spark that it hasn't seen in a while. You've been too stressed to think about love, and this week is your chance to get familiar with it again. Your weekend will be blissful, so don't let stress make it's way back into your life.

Famous Libras:
Will Smith, Toni Braxton, Ray Charles, India Arie

This is the week that change will make an appearance in your life. It may be tempting to have your usual unfazed and nonchalant attitude, but there's no need to protect yourself. You need this. Tuesday will be a great day for romance, and it won't fizzle down until Thursday. Conflict is possible on Friday, but you need to stay focused because a positive attitude will be needed for Saturday. Why you ask? A project you have been pondering on will finally become realistic, so take advantage of the opportunity coming your way. Remember that your social life will be your ticket to that dream you have been chasing, so play nice, and you'll win big.

Famous Scorpios: Gabrielle Union, P Diddy, Whoopi Goldberg, Ahmad Rashad

You're the master of networking. If you had to, you'd make connections in your sleep, easily. People feel comfortable around you, and they know you are about your business. While you have the gift of gab, it's pointless if you don't ever follow through with your plans. Don't forget why you need these new relationships, and don't feel obligated to jump on every opportunity presented to you. Some people would rather take your ideas for their own glory than build something solid with you. Be alert and you'll recognize those people when they approach you.

Famous Sagittarians:
Jay-Z, Tyra Banks, Jamie Foxx, Tina Turner

You are getting closer to where you want to be, but you also find yourself getting a little bored in the process. You're not a big fan of routine when you have your eyes fixated on a dream. But stay focused, and don't neglect your responsibilities while pursuing your dreams.

Tuesday will be the beginning of a boost in your creativity, and Thursday will be the perfect day to tackle those family issues that have been eating away at you. The weekend will bring adventure, so be open to all its possibilities. It could be that big break you have been waiting on,

Famous Capicorns: Denzel Washington, Mary J. Blige, LL Cool J, Aaliyah

This week you will discover just how important you really are to the people you have encountered. Remain humble when someone shows you that you are their inspiration. This revelation will encourage you to remain inspiring the entire week, and your positivity will attract good energy that you will hold on to long enough to discover some great opportunities you never considered.

Famous Aquarians:
Eartha Kitt, Bob Marley, Oprah Winfrey. Chris Rock

You are finally starting to feel the pressures of taking other people's burdens. While it's noble of you to try to save everyone you love from the pains of life, you're not Superwoman. Their problems have become your problems, and now you may need to call on someone to get through the issues you've adopted from someone else. It's time to focus on your own problems this week, and make sure you treat yourself for facing the problems that others couldn't deal with. Sunday will be your best day to unwind with loved ones, and get your fix of the arts.

Famous Pisces:
Smokey Robinson, Queen Latifah, Spike Lee, Erykah Badu

You are making progress in accomplishing your dreams and success continues to follow you. The only problem is it isn't happening fast enough for Aries. If you had one wish, you'd achieve all of your wildest dreams overnight, but it would lead you to the same place you are now, unsatisfied. Face it, chasing dreams is all you know how to do, and you enjoy the the chase just as much as the success. One without the other would put you in a bigger slump than you are now, so allow the possibilities to excite you and stay motivated.

Famous Arians:
Mariah Carey, Eddie Murphy, Maya Angelou, Martin Lawrence

You will be tempted to question everyone's behavior around you at the beginning of the week, but remember that every little thing does not need to be analyzed. Sometimes you just have to take things as they are and allow people to be human. By passing up an opportunity to be dramatic, you will be able to maintain your sanity throughout the week. Let the peace rollover into the weekend, and you'll have one of the best weekends you've had in a while.

Famous Taurans:
Stevie Wonder, Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, Coretta Scott King

You will need to have an open mind this week, as many ideas will present themselves to you. And these aren't the type of ideas you should pass down, so be sure to consider them and how they can impact your future. You are not miserable in your current situation, but a little change could make things better in your life. You're happier when you lead, so be sure to consider the ideas that will put you back in charge.

Wedding Season: What to Wear to Those Pesky Summer Weddings

What to wear to Summer weddings.

By: Amanda Anderson

It is that time of the year...Summer Wedding Madness. If you're the fashionable social butterfly I'm sure you are, you'll have a long list of weddings to attend this season. You'll have such a thick stack of wedding invitations, that you'll begin to ponder why the hell you aren't shoving those ridiculous wedding invitations down the throat of some other highly annoyed single woman. Seriously...what's not to love (or marry) right?

While the path of a single woman may be full of fabulous fashion, stilettos fit for Carrie Bradshaw herself, and designers to die for; when it comes to Summer weddings, most belles won't have a clue of what to wear. This in no way, shape, or form means you are one of the unfashionably challenged, it just means that you are like most people when it comes to weddings...exhausted and pretty much over it.

Before you write off the wedding and decide to instead call up your single girlfriends and make the city pay for all those painful weddings you had to attend, here are few ideas on what to wear to all those undesirable Summer weddings you'd rather skip all together.

The Informal Daytime Weddings

In the hot months of summer, a lot of weddings will be informal and held outside in the warmer months. A short dress will be a great choice for those who are feeling a little more stylish, while a skirt suit is perfect for the more conservative belles.

The Informal Evening Weddings

These are the perfect weddings to pull out your favorite cocktail dress. You can go the classic little black dress route, and keep it simple on the accessories; or you can be a little more fashionista and stay true to the trends with a beautiful floral print.

Semi Formal Daytime Weddings

A short dress will be your best option for a semi formal daytime wedding. Keep it classy of course, and make sure you know the difference between club wear and wedding appropriate garments. Most likely, if you could wear your dress to the club, you probably shouldn't wear it to a wedding.

Semi Formal Evening Weddings

A classic style cocktail dress is the perfect choice for semi formal evening weddings. Don't forget to include a string of pearls to stay true to formal style.

Formal Evening or Black Tie Weddings

By: Issa

It's all about the glam with black tie or formal evening weddings. Longer cocktail dresses work best, and they will have to be on the more dressy side of style. Shorter cocktail dresses are still appropriate, but they'll need the right touch of glam to get a pass. Shorter cocktail dresses with beading or paired with glamorous accessories will make you one of the most fashionable guests of the evening.

Ultra Formal or White Tie Weddings

Pull out your favorite long gowns and don't be afraid to spice it up with flashy accessories such as a little fur and dramatic jewelry.

I mean if you are going to be tortured with a summer full of weddings, you might as well look fabulous while you suffer.

Don't Fool Yourself Honey, It's Not Him You're In Love With

Are you in love with him or his potential?

By: Taren Vaughan

To say that you are in love with someone is a serious statement to make. For most people, it holds true meaning behind it (well it's supposed to anyway) and it shows how much you truly care about that individual. Some of us, especially ladies, are sometimes quick to say that we are in love with a man. We profess to the world that we love him so. But are we really more so in love with their potential instead?

Now having potential is not a bad thing by far. And a man that has some could be well worth your time. With a mature state of mind and some positive influences from other good men, he could morph into being that husband that you have been dreaming about. But don’t hold your breath honey; it’s his potential we are talking about here. Many of us have a tendency to confuse loving a man and loving a man’s potential. The two are totally different. Why do we fall so hard for a guy’s potential?

Hell, it’s probably because the reality is so disappointing to us that we hold on to that perfect vision of our man. We focus on all his positive assets and block out all the negative traits he has. Huge mistake. Those negative traits may be just a little too obvious to overlook and deserve some recognition. That is easier said than done, especially when you feel like your man possesses so much potential. We hope and pray that one day, he will be that wonderful husband and loving father to our children. We want them to reach that potential so bad that we are willing to wait for them to get themselves together. Now no woman should have to sit around, twiddling her thumbs, waiting for a man to come to his senses and finally get his grown man on. Our time is much too precious for that. But there are some sisters out there that swear up and down that their man is worth the wait. Been there, done that and have absolutely no intentions of going down that road ever again.

It’s hard not to fall head over heels for a man’s potential, especially if he appears to be making some positive changes. But even if he is slowly growing into that guy that you dreamed he would be, don’t be so quick to claim that “love status”. Some men are very good at putting on acts and for all you know, he could be gasing you up. Give it some time, but not too much, and see if this man of yours is truly living up to his "Knight In Shining Armor" potential. Until then, save that "love" talk for when he actually behaves in a way that is truly worth loving.

Full Court Press: Top Picks From The NBA Draft

A look at some of the top players from this year’s draft.

By: Taren Vaughan

Just like the NFL Draft, the NBA Draft is one of the most anticipated events in sports every year. Players from all over the country, and the world for that matter, are anxiously waiting to see where they will end up next. With this draft, most of the selections were predicted correctly, while others shocked critics and spectators, leaving some fans very disgruntled. Let’s take a look at some of the players who went early in the draft.

Pick # 1: John Wall
Point Guard
University of Kentucky
Washington Wizards

It was no surprise seeing North Carolina native John Wall go first in this year’s draft. As a freshman at the University of Kentucky, Wall averaged 16.6 points, 6.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds and led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in this year’s NCAA tournament. Even though he did not follow in Carmelo Anthony’s footsteps by winning a national championship as a freshman, John Wall made a huge impact on the program, shattering assists records and being named SEC Player of the Year. And let’s not forget his patented dance that had UK fans going crazy. Adding John Wall to the roster was just what the Washington Wizards needed after losing their star Gilbert Arenas for the upcoming season. His incredible athleticism and ability to get to the basket will indeed give the Wizards that edge offensively. Trust me, with this young man’s level of talent, it won’t be long before Wizards’ fans will be doing “The John Wall Dance” in the stands.

Pick # 2: Evan Turner
Guard
The Ohio State University
Philadelphia 76ers

Just as the first pick of the draft wasn’t a shocker, the second overall pick was pretty predictable as well. The Philadelphia 76ers selected 6’7 guard Evan Turner from Ohio State. Don’t let his height fool you. Turner’s ability to handle the rock gives him that point guard flavor, which is not as common for a man of his size. His sophomore and junior year, Turner led the Big Ten in scoring and broke a Big Ten Player of the Week record, receiving the award a total of eight times. One of the key qualities that Evan Turner possesses is that he knows how to be a team player. Any coaching staff should be ecstatic to have a player like Turner who plays unselfish basketball and knows how to look for his teammates in the open court. The 76ers have not managed to get a hot streak going since the early 2000’s. Evan Turner may be just the man to get them headed in that direction.

Pick # 3: Derrick Favors
Forward
Georgia Tech
New Jersey Nets

Georgia Tech’s Derrick Favors was the first ACC player to be selected in this year’s draft. Just like J. Wall, Favors did a one and done, only playing a season for the Yellow Jackets. He was named ACC Rookie of the Year and ACC All-Freshman. Known for his shot blocking ability, Derrick Favors is said to be very effective in the paint, which is one thing the Nets were looking for. Unlike a lot of NBA players, Favors didn’t begin playing basketball until he was 10 years old. That didn’t seem to matter much as he grew into one hell of a ball player. As one of the latest additions to the Nets, hopefully Derrick will be able to do a number of “Favors” for his new team.

Pick # 4: Wesley Johnson
Forward
Syracuse/Iowa State
Minnesota Timberwolves

Syracuse forward Wesley Johnson will now be reunited with his former Syracuse teammate Jonny Flynn as he prepares to suit up next year as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Although he did not remain with Iowa State, Johnson still made an impact on the program, achieving the second-best record for assists in the program’s history. His sophomore season was slightly stifled due to an ankle injury. But he was back in full effect for his junior year, averaging 16.5 points per game and having a three-point percentage of .415. This reunion Johnson and Flynn could mean more wins for the T-Wolves. Having former teammates on your squad, especially if they meshed well together, could produce a positive outcome and lead to an improved win record.

Pick # 5: DeMarcus Cousins
Forward
University of Kentucky
Sacramento Kings

Five UK players were drafted this year, with DeMarcus Cousins being the second Wildcat to be selected. Playing alongside John Wall, Cousins added much fuel to the Wildcats’ offense, averaging 15.1 points in just over 23.5 minutes into a game. This stat is very impressive for a player standing 6’11 and weighing in at 270 lbs. With excellent shot blocking skills and an aggressive defensive force, DeMarcus Cousins will provide the Kings with a huge presence on both ends of the court. One flaw of Cousins’ is his attitude. Despite all of his outstanding athletic achievements at Kentucky, he racked up a total of five technical fouls during this past season. At the moment, we can blame it on immaturity. But Cousins should be careful. He doesn’t want to end up in the T.W.A. (Talent With Attitude) category. In the long run, it could cost him game suspensions and money like it has done to other very talented players like Rasheed Wallace and Dennis Rodman.

Pick # 6: Ekpe Udoh
Forward
Baylor University
Golden State Warriors

Baylor’s Ekpe Udoh is suiting up for the Golden State Warriors next year. This 6’10 shot blocker led Baylor in rebounding and shot blocking last season as he is very athletic for a big man. Surprisingly, he was ranked second on the team for assists for the season, an interesting achievement for a man of his stature. Udoh can be both an offensive and defensive weapon which is something that Golden State can look forward to. Golden State has been quiet for quite some time now. Udoh should provide them with a huge spark on both ends of the court.

Pick # 7: Greg Monroe
Forward/Center
Georgetown University
Detroit Pistons

Hailing from Allen Iverson’s alma mater, Greg Monroe was one of the players representing the Big East in the draft. He will be showcasing his talents next year with the Detroit Pistons. As a First-Team All-Big East Selection, Monroe averaged 16.1 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists in a time span of 34.2 minutes per game. During his sophomore season, Monroe led his team to a division championship game against West Virginia. Greg Monroe is noted as an excellent passer for a player of his size and really has a true understanding of the game of basketball. The Detroit Pistons won the NBA Finals in 2004, defeating the LA Lakers. Since then, the team has not been able to reach championship caliber again. This former Hoya may help the Pistons re-gain some of their momentum that has faltered over the past years.

Pick # 8: Al-Farouq Aminu
Power Forward
Wake Forest University
LA Clippers

Last draft season, the LA Clippers got Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin. This year, they have added more sizeable talent to their front line by acquiring power forward Al-Farouq Aminu. Aminu became the first Deac since the great Tim Duncan to lead the ACC in rebounds. He also led the ACC with an astounding 19 double-doubles. His ability to crash the boards and put up points should give the Clippers something to look forward to next season. The Clippers’ next season holds much promise, especially with a healthy Griffin in the line-up. Blake Griffin is a beast is his own right. But Al-Farouq Aminu’s skills are nothing to smirk at by far. A collaboration of the two will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.

Pick # 10: Paul George
Forward
Fresno State University
Indiana Pacers

Selected right after Gordon Hayward, Paul George out of Fresno State will be joining forces with former UNC Tarheel Tyler Hansbrough as an Indiana Pacer. While at Fresno State, George averaged 16.6 points and 7.1 rebounds during his sophomore season. One of his most impressive stats is his free throw shooting percentage, which sits at .906. Say what you want, but when it’s crunch time and the final score could be determined by making a pair of free throws, a player like Paul George could most definitely come through for your team. With the ability to get up in the air and snatch down rebounds on a consistent basis, Paul George will be a great contributor to the Pacer line-up.

Treat Others The Way You Wish To Be Treated

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”
Matthew 7:12 (NIV)

By: Taren Vaughan

The way we treat people is very important. How you treat someone will most likely determine how that person will treat you in return and if you are nice to them, then they will be pleasant to you. If you are mean and hateful to a person, then you should expect the same foul treatment in return. Sometimes, we don’t think about our actions towards others. We are quick to dismiss another person’s feelings without even giving it a second thought. But then we turn around and look for someone to care about ours. It doesn’t work that way. According to God’s word, we should treat others as we would want them to treat us. It’s a “you get what you give” type of situation. If you want someone to treat you with respect, then you should do the same. A lot of us don’t realize the importance of how treat people. Either we don’t realize the things that we are doing or we simply don’t care. Which ever holds true, your treatment of someone will be a direct reflection of how that person will treat you.

So when we think about disrespecting someone, we should really take the time to remember this scripture. And always know that you will, in the majority of the situations that you are in, get back exactly what you dish out.

Basketball Wives: A Lesson in Self Respect

Regardless of the shameful drama, you could learn a lot from the Basketball Wives.

By: Angela Allen

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve at least heard about VH1‘s recently aired season of Basketball Wives. It is a well known stereotype that the wives and girlfriends of professional athletes are nothing but gold diggers who simply want attention in the media; and to enjoy lavish lifestyles of shopping on Rodeo Drive, traveling the world to experience resorts in every culture, sporting the most desired designer labels, having personal hair and nail stylists, live-in-maids, eating at the most exquisite restaurants, and to rock that enormous “Harry Winston” to proclaim the unbreakable bond in marriage to their very own professional athlete. Although one could easily assume this to be true by looking at a few episodes, you are then forced to wonder, do these women really think these men solely belong to them?

The cast was composed of executive producer Shaunie O’Neal, soon to be ex-wife of professional basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, Jennifer Williams, wife of professional basketball player Eric Williams, Gloria Govan, fiance of professional basketball player Matt Barnes, and Evelyn Lozada, ex-fiance of professional basketball player Antoine Walker. Two other women were apart of the cast although they were ex-girlfriends of Professional athletes; Suzie Ketcham, ex-girlfriend of professional basketball player Michael Olowonkondi, and Royce Reed, former dancer for professional basketball teams in Miami and Orlando.

According to Shaunie, the show was created to break the stereotypes of the spouses of pro-athletes and to give viewers a better understanding of the lives and struggles that these women have to endure. After keeping up with every episode, I then understood that although most of these women seem to stay in these relationships regardless of infidelity, some of them were willing to break it off and live their lives demanding respect and fidelity within their relationships. Not only do they want respect, they want to be loved. Shaunie led that example herself, by filing for divorce from her husband of nearly 5 years, Shaquille O’Neal, due to his unfaithfulness in marriage.

The reunion episode was aired featuring the entire cast excluding Gloria Govan, and even had the infamous “groupie” of the season, Sandra Lopez, appear as a guest. Things went smoothly while there were humorous recaps and explanations to emotional scenes, but when Lopez walked onto the stage, things went downhill. There were disrespectful comments constantly being thrown between the guest and the other cast members, and eventually Jennifer’s marriage seemed to have lost all sanctity when Lopez told America about Jennifer’s husband, Eric Williams, only viewing her as a business asset. As expected, this sparked a drama filled event, even without Gloria in the midst. A bucket of water was thrown onto the alleged “groupie” by Suzie, and resulted in her arrest.

Although I’m sure that this was entertaining to some, an issue then needed to be addressed. Instead of getting mad at the “groupies”, why not reverse that rage and blame the men who allow these other women to disrespect their relationships?

Kudos Shaunie, for showing women everywhere that regardless of how lavish your lifestyle may be, nothing is more important than your self-respect.

The Hefty Pricetag on Free Lovin’- Promiscuous Girls

Why are we so reckless with sex?

By: Dawn Marbury

Why on God’s Earth are STD infection rates increasing when condoms are everywhere? People are divorcing at all time highs, and pop culture loves a good ditty about group sex (see Britney Spears Three or Usher’s Lil Freak) while monogamy or common sense has taken a back seat to gettin’ it on. Everyone from hoochies on the corner to news anchors use the word baby daddy as freely as any other, and the shame people- women in particular used to feel about expressing sexual desires and spilling sexual deets has been replaced with boasting, pride, and unapologetically going for theirs. The glamorous life of bed hoppin’ and nut guzzling is certainly brought crashing down to reality when the fruits of heaux labor are harvested in life.

People haaaate pyramid schemes, but always seem to forget that once you crack the cookie jar, you are effectively having sex with everybody your partner has. These numbers add up quicker than any multi level marketing program you have ever seen. Instead of viewing our bodies as temples, we allow them to get looted like an electronic store during the L.A Riots. Women that aren’t even gay are having sex with other women not because they are bicurious, but to please their male partners. Women have began to equate their worth with their pussies. Has music brainwashed us all? Do we all really think that sex is this consequence free, hook up that means nothing after the fact? Not including the physical risks of promiscuous behavior, the personal emotional effects of heauxisms are reputation ruining and promote a false identity as to who we really are. What are you really saying about yourself with dicks in your mouth just for the hell of it? Are we really so bored with life that sex is all there is to do with somebody anybody?

Groupies are famous, mistresses are infamous. In the times of worldwide instant communication, the attention hungry whore that can’t get featured on Perez will take starring on your video phone. She will even pop up on Facebook- ass and titties first hoping to get even more attention from horndogs, male or female. The party girl image has caught on like wildfire as even middle school girls are down for whatever. We can stock our stores with condoms, teach our kids about abstinence or not, but the truth is until we figure out why any attention is good attention we won’t ever scratch the surface of the epidemic sex obsession in America. It can’t be the people are screwing like rabbits just because sex feels good.

We as a culture have abused the sacred act of sex. Maybe because so many American children (male and female) are sexually abused. Innocent childhood curiosity has morphed into a race into who can be the grownest the soonest. Adults are guilty as hell of encouraging their kids into grown up behavior. It’s almost as if we are passing on our abuse a perverted rite of passage. Adults are not always emotionally equipped or physically prepared for the consequences of sex and there is no way teenagers are. We can’t stop teenagers from having sex, but to turn a blind out to it is almost as bad as the abuse itself.

The reasons people choose to have sex is the problem we as a society must tackle. Do we have sex because we are horny, or like someone, love someone, or just to feel attention and affection? Has our microwaved society zapped love into moments of one on one attention that feeds the ego and not the soul? We are so out of touch with our authentic selves that we no longer respect our intuition or our conscious. Thinking about the crazy story you are going to tell your friends, and giving the best head has taken precedence over what you are doing to yourself. Men and women that are having sex for conquest are acting out insecurities, inadequacies, and are doing everything to run from the ugliness that they feel inside when no one else is around. You aren’t showing your independence, you are waving a flag of desperation on the S.S. Pathetic. The thing is, no one can save you from yourself.

Sex Myths That Destroy Women’s Sex Lives

Contrary to popular and very ignorant belief, sex is not a man’s game. In 2010, fabulous women everywhere are taking charge of their sexuality and making responsible choices regarding their bodies. No longer do women envision sex as simply an act to please their man. In the new era of martinis, stiletto wearing bosses, and divas with higher degrees; women seek pleasure from their partners. And they make no apologies for it.

Although the independent sister coalition has made the message clear, even a woman’s movement can’t manage to erase all the ignorance from the masses.

Traces of ignorance can still be found in men and even sisters who still live in the 1950s when it comes to sex. To these poor and outdated souls, to think of a woman being knowledgeable of her own body is taboo, and they are responsible for the many sexual myths that can make your sex life...dry.

While you may consider yourself lucky, you may not have managed to steer clear of the ridiculous myths that have managed to put a damper on the sex lives of many women, and even cause them not to know their own bodies.

Here are some myths that must be buried immediately.

1. Women can’t have orgasms through sexual intercourse.

This particular myth must have been created by some selfish man that tried miserably to do the “impossible,” and failed miserably. Too ignorant to think that it was simply something he had not done right to please his woman, he ran back to all his homeboys and told them that it just could not be done. These homeboys took the myth back to their girlfriends, and now every woman in the world is expected to believe that the only pathway to a climax is through oral sex.

Lies…all lies I tell you.

Any woman can have an orgasm through sexual intercourse. It just takes a man that is not too arrogant…I mean ignorant…to take the time to learn her body.

Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise, if they do, run. 9 times out of 10, if a man is too selfish to learn how to please a woman sexually, he’ll also be too selfish to please you in a relationship too.

2. If women are in love, they will kindly give oral sex without receiving it.

This mentality is the surest way to Splits-Ville. No woman appreciates or decides to stay with a selfish bastard of a partner. In the world of grown-ups, there are no free handouts gentlemen.

3. Women don’t like or need as much sex as men.

Can you think of a more ridiculous statement? Sex was not created just for men. It involves two people and both parties must get some satisfaction out of it.

And studies everywhere indicate that if a woman isn’t pleased sexually by her man, the relationship tends to get very ugly. The quickest way to lose a woman is not to please her.

Women are simply moodier than men, and it isn’t any different for our sexual appetite. Hormone levels can cause women to want more or less sex at different moments, and a woman’s sexual mood is more diverse than that of a man’s. But in no shape or form does that mean we don’t need or desire sex like men do.

4. Women just don’t like rough and fast sex.

Yes, we women are gentle creatures with feelings and emotions, and we require all those things in most cases before we get it on. It’s actually the romance that turns us on when it comes to men, but once we have gotten our romance fix, rough and fast isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It even increases our likelihood of reaching that good old climax.

5. Once you sleep with a woman a few times, you pretty much know what she likes sexually.

This gets so many men in trouble with women. Men tend to think they know a woman sexually after sleeping with her a few times, but the truth is women have different sexual moods. What may have worked last week may not work this week.

So to be on the safe side and not on the couch tonight, men need to be sure to communicate with their partners to make sure both are on the same page.

And ladies stop assuming he can read your mind sexually. Trust me, he can’t.

Sex can be a satisfying thing for a man and a woman. But it is always important to keep the communication at a focal point of your relationship. If both people feel comfortable enough to be open, there is a greater chance both will have a fulfilling sex life.

Now before you take this article as a stamp of approval to go run wild and personally dispel every myth, remember that the staff of Urban Belle believes in safe sex or no sex. Protect yourself if you choose to be sexually active because even great sex isn’t worth your life…now is it?

The Evolution of Ciara

Ciara, is that you?

By: Amanda Anderson

In 2004, singer Ciara stepped into the scene of the Atlanta "Crunk Music" movement, and told every man alive that they could forget about having her cookies. With the perfect blend of heavy beats, dope hooks, and sassy mantras; the Atlanta native had the whole music world at her feet. It had been a while since there was a female singer who not only had the charisma, charm, and sex appeal thing on lock; but this chick was a true entertainer. She had the sickest dance moves we've seen in a while, since Janet Jackson started focusing on acting and our beloved Babygirl Aaliyah passed away in 2000. The charts were hers for the taking, and she chewed and spit out the Billboard's like it was a southern cooked meal gone totally wrong. Damn Cici.

2004 was the year she released her platinum debut album Goodies. And the hot single, by the same name, was a Hip-Hop anthem that initiated a woman's movement that left men with a horrible case of blue balls. Ciara had every woman singing their lungs out in the club and reminding men that they had no chance in hell of taking them home.

This formula worked well for an 18 year old Ciara, and she had a style that made women feel like she was their super strong alter-ego speaking on their behalf, while the fellas thought Ciara was the sexiest down to earth homegirl they hopped to hell they could snatch away from Bow Wow.

Her signature image at the time was an ATL fitted, a sexy pair of jeans, a dope ass hoodie, and a way to make the hardest dance moves look easy as hell. Combine that with her ability to pen some of the catchiest tunes we've heard in years and one very talented ATL producer named Jazzy Pha, and you have a muli-platinum debut album.

The album went three times platinum, and sold roughly 5 million copies world wide. Not bad for a first album, huh?

The sexy homegirl image worked well, and honestly, it made us a love Ciara a little more for just being that around the way girl that we could relate to.

Two years later, she evolved and decided to release an album that highlighted that growth. In 2006, she dropped her most successful album to date, Ciara: The Evolution. Fresh from a very public break-up with rapper Bow Wow, Ciara started to somewhat drop the whole homegirl act and instead became that on the low sexy homie lover friend. Even 50 Cent was feeling it...so much it was rumored that they had sparked a relationship after recording her smash hit "Can't Leave Him Alone." Yummy for Ciara, but major loss for Bow Wow.

The album was certified platinum only 5 weeks after its release, and became her first number one album. In her video for one of her biggest hits, "Promise", Ciara was no longer that young girl from the "A" giving you her mild version of sexy in tight jeans and a hoodie. Ciara had grown into a real sex symbol, but she still hadn't quite lost herself. She managed to find the perfect mix of evolution and staying true to herself...a formula that didn't alienate her fans, and still managed to grab some new ones.

But somewhere in the dirty music industry where young innocent girls start to cross that fine line between sexy to slutty within the third album, Ciara had totally lost herself. There was no trace of that down to earth homegirl from around the way, but instead only reminiscences of every man's first strip club experience. By the release of her third single for her third album Fantasy Ride, Ciara was sporting afro wigs and performing some of the most explicit dance moves that would make any grown man blush.

I honestly couldn't even recognize her in her music video for "Love Sex Magic." There had to be at least 5 times when I had to ask "Who the hell is this?" while I watched her desperately gyrate and coochie pop on the floor with back-up dancers as if she was trying to pump life into a career that was on life support.

Ciara has just released two multi-platinum albums, so what the hell was she trying to prove? Was she trying to prove that she still had it? I mean seriously, this girl never lost it in the first place.

And it's clear that no one loves a desperate R&B singer because Fantasy Ride didn't even manage to go gold. It only sold a measly 300,000+ copies worldwide and this was during the same time that Rihanna became a superstar and Beyonce revealed to the world that her alter-ego Sasha Fierce wasn't to be played with.

It's obvious Ciara began to feel the pressures of the business, and that her handlers and clueless music executives told her she'd have to taken the same route that Beyonce and them took to gain her popularity back. Ciara believed it, and created her own alter ego "Super C." By this time, I decided I would rather patiently wait for the return of the real Ciara than to buy an album that couldn't even compare to the ones she released a couple years ago. Silly rabbit, slutty gimmicks are for talentless whores who sucked and slurped their way into the business, and Ciara my dear, you're not one of them.

A little self-reflection must have taken place because Ciara went back in the studio to record her fourth album, and this one has Ciara written all over it.

Entitled Basic Instinct, Ciara went with her own instinct, and decided to go back to the formula that works. By the release of her first music video for the heavy bass "Ride"; Ciara had on her signature ATL fitted, dance moves that looked physically impossible, and that confidence of a true southern girl that knows she can take any woman's man without really trying.

She remembered her Evolution, and gave us the perfect combination of sexy and homegirl. It took a failed album, a few really horrible afro wigs, a naked travesty with Vibe Magazine; but hey, Ciara is back.

I know Beyonce and Rihanna fans will say she doesn't have a shot in hell of making a comeback, but I honestly believe "Ride" was just a little taste of what's to come from this next album. "Ride" wasn't even the best she's got, and Ciara's probably sitting down somewhere with a glass of wine just smiling because she's got the right hand of cards to play from.

She's got her mojo back, and she knows just how to use it.

Welcome back Ciara, we've missed you homegirl.

Men Speak: Real Men Are Easy to Please

Men say a man should be easy to please, unless he's selfish.

By: Amanda Anderson

I consider myself to be a pretty lucky girl since I have a number of men in my life that I consider close friends. While I simply love to chat it up with my gal pals about our crazy and sometimes dramatic pursuits in love, I still appreciate wholeheartedly the honest insight my homeboys give me as well. Sure girlfriends are great, but if we sat down and talked to our guy friends about our relationships, we probably could have prevented a lot of heartbreaks and disappointments.

Every girl isn't so lucky to have a close circle of penis equipped homies, so I thought I'd share some of the best things they ever said to me that ultimately changed my whole perspective of men and relationships.

Here's the latest (and I'll have to leave him nameless since he's a close friend)...

He Said: "If you want a happy man, feed em, f-ck em and give him SOME space."

I Said: "Well what about the men who cheat?"

He Replied: "Selfish."

I meditated a little on the conversation, and of course I shared the tid bits with the remainder of my homeboy crew. They confirmed that the first statement does indeed summarize a man's needs completely. In fact, they admit that men are fairly easy to please. They prefer peaceful relationships with women who can supply these basic but essential needs, and will remain satisfied as long as each continues to be met by their woman.

The thing that stuck out to me was the remark on selfishness. Apparently my gentlemen friends feel that if a man is getting those particular needs met, there really isn't a logical reason to cheat. They believe any man that cheats when his woman is cooking, feeding and sexing him has to be a selfish bastard.

If that's all it takes to please a man, why are there so many broken relationships? That's easy. There are just some men out here that can't be pleased. The thrill of dropping the panties of every woman they meet is greater than their current level of maturity. And ladies, sorry to say, but even your good loving and cooking won't change that.

My homeboys suggest you stay clear from any man that's too difficult to satisfy, since clearly he's broken the "Man Law" which states Real Men are easy to please.

And who wants to date a man that can't even adhere to the Man Laws?

Your Menstrual Cycle: When You Should Be Worried

When you should worry about your menstrual cycle.

By: Amanda Anderson

It is the one time of the month that every woman hates. During our menstrual cycle, we cramp, we're irritated, and we secretly want to locate Eve's ass and drag her to the pits of hell for setting every woman up for this unwanted monthly visitor that brings us nothing but trouble.

It's no secret that it sucks when our monthly visitor arrives, and we may suck teeth and complain about its visit; but when it doesn't show up or acts all kind of crazy, we start to feel like our whole life is in shambles.

Before you make that trip to the doctor, here's a few things you need to know about your menstrual cycle. Who knows, maybe these facts could save you a trip.

So what exactly is a normal period anyway?

We've been told since our Sex-Ed days that an average menstrual cycle comes every 28 days. But the fact is, there are many women who receive their periods every 21 days. And 21 days is pretty normal and nothing to panic about.

The average time span of a menstrual cycle is 3 to 5 days. But some women are completely cursed, and will have their cycle for a full 7 days.

Neither one of these factors truly matter as each woman is different. So don't be alarmed if your numbers don't look anything like these.

What really matters

So if the time span or frequency of a woman's menstrual cycle don't really matter that much, what does? Changes.

Women should be concerned if they recognize too many changes in their cycle. It is not normal for a woman to experience frequent changes in the time span and frequency of her menstrual cycle.

If you've noticed that your period has slowed or stopped completely, there is definitely something unhealthy going on with your body. If you aren't approaching your 50s, you shouldn't experience a stopped menstrual cycle.

Causes of a stopped period in young women other than pregnancy is excessive exercise. Yes ladies, it's totally possible to exercise so much that you become unhealthy.

And ladies who are experiencing excessive dieting can also stop their periods.

More serious and life threatening causes of stopped periods are stress, Ovarian failure, disease of the uterus, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, thyroid or pituitary gland disorders, disorder of the hypothalamus, and obesity.

If your period has stopped completely and you're in your 20s and 30s with no proof of pregnancy, see a doctor immediately.

Heavy Periods

During a menstrual cycle, most women will only lose about 2 to 3 tablespoons of blood every month. Those with heavier cycles will bleed about 5 or more tablespoons.

Heavy menstrual cycles are one of the greatest causes of anemia in most women. Those who lose more blood, also lose large amounts of iron. Low iron levels causes one to become Anemic.

Anemia is a very common health condition, but even it can be life threatening if it becomes severe and is left untreated. Blood transfusions could be needed if you don't catch anemia in enough time.

Other causes of heavy flows are a change in birth control, miscarriages, clotting disorders, cancer of the uterus, and Uterine Fibroids.

Oral contraceptives are effective in lightening the flow of your menstrual cycle, so speak with your doctor to find a contraceptive that will work for your case. If you take contraceptives and find no improvement in blood loss, you might need an ultrasound immediately.

Spotting Between Periods

This is a serious condition and should not be taken lightly. There is nothing regular about bleeding in between periods.

Causes of spotting can be an irritated sore in the vaginal area, failure to properly take your birth control, as well as more serious causes such as miscarriages and cancer.

Be sure to see your doctor immediately if you are bleeding between periods.

Pain During Menstrual Cycles

It's normal to cramp during your period, but if you find that pain medication such as Aspirin isn't doing the trick, and you can't seem to get out of bed, you need to contact a doctor immediately.

Excessive pain is just not normal during a menstrual cycle.

Painful periods, called dysmenorrhea, are accompanied by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headaches, and discomfort in the lower back.

A pap smear, pelvic exam, ultrasound or laparoscopy are essential to finding out the cause in an intense menstrual cycle. To battle the intensity, a pain medication prescribed by your doctor can also cut out intense cramps and discomfort.

Be sure to pay close attention to your menstrual cycle and report any unwarranted changes to your doctor immediately.

Fab Eye Make-up Ideas

What to do when eye make-up has left you uninspired.

By: Amanda Anderson

A gorgeous set of lids can get a woman far in her beauty regime, but she won't get very far if she finds herself uninspired. When a woman runs out of ideas with what to do with her eye make-up, she might as well go bare and forsake color palettes all together.

Before you give up on that dream of having lids to die for, here's a little inspiration that should tickle your fancy, and encourage you to reach for those palettes once again.

Go for the brighter hues.

Brighter colors are in this season and they look fabulous on lids. The best colors will be cool, with the right touch of warmth to make a statement.

Hues such as blues, greens, and metallics will be a hit this season. Be fearless and go outside the box when choosing the right shade of eyeshadow.

Don't forget to rack up on plenty of primer when rocking your brights, since primer is the secret weapon to increasing the intensity of brighter eye shadows.

Apply eyeliner to your lash line to add more drama to this look, and rely on a great mascara to complete a look of intensity.

Colored Eyeliners bring the drama.

Dramatic Eyeliner is all the rage, and it's everywhere from the red carpets to your local social scene of beauty-holics and make-up addicts.

These eyeliners are extremely diverse, and it's easy for every belle to find a color she simply cannot live without. Purples and greens will be the most popular this season, while some will find it impossible to resist the shimmer eyeliners.

Don't be afraid to sparkle a little and take the red carpet look everywhere you go.

Get crazy for Cat Eyes.

If you plan on having another wild and crazy night with your gal pals, which includes embarking on a pretty crazy party or two, don't be afraid to take your make-up to a more extreme level of purr-ty.

If done right, cat eyes are exciting and bold enough for those who really want a change with their look.

To achieve this look, you'll need a liquid black eyeliner. Gently lift the tip towards the end of the eye to create a cat look, and go light on the eyeshadow.

To add a little glamour, choose a nude or beige color that has a little shimmer to apply to your lids. For the final touch, curl your lashes and use a mascara that will give your lashes loads of definition.

When all else fails, there's always The Smokey Eye.

The Smokey Eye remains one of the most popular beauty trends, and that's because it just oozes drama. Versatility also makes this look a favorite, as many colors such as greys, golds, greens, and purples can create this look effortlessly.

Although there's many colors to choose from, black still remains your best bet for Smokey Eye domination.

Don't forget to use a great mascara and a little mineral make-up to create a more natural look.
